Caregivers are not only people that work in care communities—caregivers are more often loved ones that care for patients in their home. Transferring can be difficult for in-home caregivers as they are not always medically healthy themselves. Lifting can easily cause injury. Assisted living and skilled nursing community caregivers are accustomed to lifting all day, every day. Back, shoulder and leg injuries are prevalent to these professions. Beasy can ease the burden on caregivers, and reduce the number of workers’ compensation cases for businesses.
Beasy Transfer Systems are not only used in care communities and homes, they are also useful for dentists, eye doctors, and x-ray technicians. Beasy helps these professionals easily transfer their patients onto the specialty chairs or tables necessary for their treatment. Because the seat easily circulates a full 360 degrees on the base, our systems can also be used for a wide range of motion exercises for hands, feet, or other body parts.
Assistants for Transfers: As everyone’s medical needs are different, each transfer is also different. Using our premium transfer boards takes practice! While learning how the transfer board works for you, two assistants are recommended for the first few patient transfers. Make sure you feel secure with your transferring technique before using one caregiver. We recommend clearance from a physical therapist or doctor for all unassisted transfers.
Make a Plan: Try a virtual transfer without the patient before attempting the real thing. Remove the arm of the wheelchair and foot pedals to give yourself ample room to transfer. Set the board where you will transfer, and slide the seat back and forth to make sure there are no obstacles in your way. Talking to the patient about how you will proceed with the transfer will allow them to help you as much as possible, and help them feel comfortable with the procedure. Sometimes “1…2…3…GO” can help the patient and caregiver work together.
Keep Your Transfer Surface Level: There should never be more than a six inch incline or decline between surfaces of the transfer. Use of a wheelchair cushion or towels may help level these surfaces. This is important for safety, and will reduce the possibility of injury. Make sure there is a secure amount of the board on both transferring surfaces. Be careful of soft, cushioned surfaces like a bed that may compress leaving less of the board on the surface.
The model #1100 is the 40″ “Original S-Shaped Board” by Beasy. This model is ideal for automobile transfers. It has also been used successfully to boost or reposition patients in bed, and with transferring larger profile patients.
The Beasy II model #1200 is a 28″ board that works perfectly for small areas, especially the bathroom. If the attending professional approves, this system can be used for independent transfers. Many facilities also use the Beasy II model for boosting patients in bed.
The BeasyGlyder model #1300 is a 32″ board that is a great solution for situations when the arm of the wheelchair is not removable or the wheel is an obstacle. The crescent shape of the board facilitates the caregiver’s natural transfer motion. It is also great for car transfers.
